Written by David Bandrowski | Aug 8, 2023 5:14:11 PM

Welcome to the second episode of our pre-recorded clawhammer banjo workshop series with Michael Miles. Throughout this episode, Michael and co-host David Bandrowski will discuss filler licks that can be used when backing up someone who is singing or playing a melody. Join us for an informative conversation and learn some helpful tips!

Michael goes into depth about how to create your own filler licks using a chunk of time and a target note. These can be used at the end of a vocal line phrase or the end of the total song. Using the classic tune "This Train Is Bound For Glory"  and  "Worried Man Blues" Michael demonstrates how and when to create and use these licks. Use these filler ideas to make each of the songs you play unique so that they don't all sound the same.

In his discussion, Michael shares helpful tips on using a capo to play in different keys, which allows for easy tuning changes without having to retune your banjo. He also covers the proper usage of Double C tuning and how to decide which tunes should use which tuning for you.

Come and join us for this fun workshop where you can take your clawhammer banjo skills to the next level. Allow the immensely talented Michael Miles to guide you on an extraordinary musical journey, where you will refine your craft and unlock a world of boundless creativity. Don't hesitate to share any questions or suggestions for future episodes in the comments section below. Let's embark on this adventure together!
