The International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) World of Bluegrass week kicks off today in Raleigh, North Carolina where you can celebrate, participate and enjoy anything and everything bluegrass!
Starting on Thursday night, March 3rd Gayle Skidmore will be playing at the Casbah! Gayle is a born songwriter, her natural ability and innate passion for music made her music career unavoidable. Classically trained on the piano from the age of 4, she also plays at least 20 other instruments including 5-string banjo, guitar and folk harp in her captivating musical style. Finding endless inspiration in the whirlwind of life she never ceases to take her audiences on a musical journey in her live shows. This will be a show to remember!
You've practiced for a week, and now it's time to add your left hand!
The Bluegrass Situation is roots culture redefined and does one thing particularly well: they cover good music. It is that time of year where they bring their musical finds together and put on a hell of a bash featuring several of their favorite bands at The LA Bluegrass Situation! Will you be there?
The Duke of Drive, Terry Baucom, is well known to bluegrass fans. Terry's time with the award-winning Doyle Lawson and Quiksilver Band not only brought him critical acclaim but made his name a household word among the bluegrass community.
Music has been an important part of the Baucom family for generations; his father played guitar, his grandfather clawhammer banjo, and his great-grandfather playing fiddle. It would seem only natural the Terry would follow in their footsteps, starting with fiddle and gravitating to banjo as his main instrument by the 70's. Terry's first single album, "In the Groove" came out this year and he proves, yet again, what a master of hard-driving bluegrass music he is.
A Brief History
Learning anything new can be a challenge. In the past I have approached most new songs with excitement and a good dose of trepidation! After all, my banjos skills are modest and that is just being honest. Recently I was sent the music for “Dueling Banjos” that included both the musical notation and tablature for guitar and banjo. Having had requests from customers for this music, I knew it was a great offering for the “more experienced player.” But, what about the beginner...the player who knows where the strings are without looking and can manage a pull-off, slide, and hammer on? These few basic skills are covered in “First Lessons Banjo” by Jack Hatfield , a book I have recommended frequently to new players. Could I even begin to learn “Dueling Banjos” with this basic arsenal of banjo skills? Over this last holiday I gave it a try...
